An offshore Tobago gas discovery was announced by BHP Billiton Ltd. at deepwater exploration well #2-Bongos in Block 14. According to the company, the well penetrated three targeted gas sands. Although no oil was recovered, the company believes there could also be oil in the block. The venture follows the first well on the block, #1-Bongos, which experienced mechanical difficulties and was plugged and abandoned. Melbourne, Australia-based BHP is the operator of Trinidad and Tobago’s northern contract area Block 14 and #2-Bongos with 70% interest in partnership with BP Plc, holding the remaining 30%.
