Ontario Power Generation Inc.
About
As Ontario’s largest clean electricity generator, OPG produces about half of the province’s power using our diverse portfolio of publically-owned generating assets. Our nuclear stations are the clean-power workhorses in our fleet. We rely on them to produce stable baseload energy with virtually no air pollution.
To maintain these valuable assets, we have started work on Canada's largest clean energy project - the mid-life refurbishment of the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station (GS). We’re also investing in the Pickering Nuclear GS to ensure it continues safely operating until 2024.
In 2014, OPG burned its last piece of coal to make electricity. It was North America’s largest climate change action to date. We refueled two of our thermal stations with biomass, which provides Ontario with renewable, dispatchable power. It also optimized the use of existing public assets. We completed converting Atikokan GS in July 2014, and the Thunder Bay GS conversion to advanced biomass followed soon after in January 2015.
Hydroelectric power is a renewable resource that has fueled Ontario’s economic growth since the beginning of the 20th century. Today, it accounts for more than one-third of OPG’s electricity production. More than half of our hydro stations are over 80 years old, but thanks to ongoing maintenance and upgrades, they remain important contributors of clean, low-cost power in the province.
OPG works efficiently and to the highest standards of safety. We strive to deliver all projects on time and budget. We conduct all aspects of our business openly, honestly and with integrity. And we look beyond the bottom line to support the wellbeing of this province by generating power with purpose.
