The FAZEBREAK system was engineered to mitigate fluid losses and allow application during the completion phase using the existing rig pits and pumps. This cleanup system provides a delay that allows removal of the work string and the subsequent isolation of the open hole. The mitigation of losses promotes the homogenous and uniform placement of the system.
FAZEBREAK is unique in that as a water-based chelant, it is effective for oil-based cleanup. Relatively slow reaction time; reduced health, safety and environment impact; minimal corrosion; mitigation of emulsions and system upsets; and compatibility are among the characteristics that differentiate FAZEBREAK from conventional breaker systems. Chelating is a gradual process that helps mitigate “wormholing” and the subsequent losses that occur with the more immediate reactions common with acid and oxidizers.
Key components of the system are a dipotassium chelant and a water-wetting amine surfactant. Protonating and deprotonating of these compounds achieve co-equilibrium, which is distinctive in that it maintains the pH of the system below 6, thus facilitating reversibility of the residual FAZEPRO filtercake. The amine surfactant promotes water-wetting of solids, especially those inherent in a residual cleanup. This dual relationship promotes a more complete cleanup whereby the system can be placed in contact with the residual filtercake over the entire openhole interval with little or no losses. This cleanup system also can be used as a gravel-pack fluid and is compatible with common friction reducers.
