A new solid state viscosity sensor called ViSmart from BiODE Inc. holds great promise for several oil industry applications. Capable of taking instantaneous samples and/or continuous real-time viscosity measurements, the surface version of the sensor measures only 1.3 in. by 1.1 in. by 0.4 in. and weighs only 4 oz. In its present configuration, it can be used in any process application or in a surface production facility. The unit, with an integrated temperature measurement sensor, has no moving parts and is unaffected by vibration or flow conditions. Accurate viscosity measurements can be made in liquids ranging from 1.0 cp to 10,000 cp, and according to BiODE, field calibration is not required.
The surface version is hermetically sealed and can withstand temperatures to 275°F (135°C), but custom packaging is available for specific industry applications, according to Dr. Jeffrey Andle, chief technology officer. Asked about possible downhole applications, Andle said, "Presently, the sensor is not configured for high-pressure applications, but we believe this is possible. Anyone needing a real-time sensor that can be totally immersed in a flow stream could use the ViSmart sensor and, with proper packaging, in downhole tools."
