Database stores geopressure information
Knowledge Systems has introduced Pressworks, a relational database that allows operators to store and manage geopressure-related data, including geophysical, petrophysical and drilling data. The database is developed in Visual C++, using the Microsoft Foundation Class and Microsoft.Net. The database runs on Windows servers and Unix and supports Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle.
Pressworks can connect to corporate repositories to view and retrieve well or well log information for the creation of a project built with Knowledge Systems' Drillworks software suite. It also can use Web services to connect to commercial data vendors. Users can work projects using the application database tied to Drillworks and then download results to Pressworks so that data of known quality can be assured for users that want to browse or consume Drillworks results.
Pressworks allows engineers and others involved in the planning and real-time management of drilling operations to have greater access to a broad range of relevant information such as well logs and geopressure data as well as analyses from pore pressure and geomechanics experts. Using the database enhances team collaboration between geoscience and drilling departments to improve well planning and drilling operations.

Modeling tool eliminates reformatting
DecisionSpace Nexus software from Landmark is a suite of reservoir simulation tools designed to perform full-field simulation on complex hydrocarbon assets. In modeling fluid flow, Nexus technology couples multiple reservoirs across a field and solves for varying fluid types and formulations in a single fully implicit simulation solution. Additionally, Nexus simulation technology simultaneously solves fluid flow for the surface facility network as well as for the subsurface reservoir for more stable and accurate full-field modeling.
The software provides an automated workflow that eliminates the need for data transfrers and reformatting. The Nexus simulator leverages a unique volume-balance formulation that results in convergence on an accurate fluid flow model in fewer iterations. This results in speed-ups in what was traditionally a very time-consuming and compute-intensive process. Simultaneously solving for surface and subsurface simulation across multiple-reservoir assets in a single simulation system establishes more accurate production forecasts.

First quad multilateral
Zakum Development Company (Zadco), in conjunction with Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (Adma-Opco), Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), Japan Oil Development Co., Ltd. (Jodco) and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation-Technology and Research Center (Jogmec-TRC) have successfully drilled and completed the first offshore quad multilateral system using multiple completion windows in a deviated well in the Upper Zakum field. This was also the first time three laterals in the same well were accessed and stimulated using mechanically selective through-tubing re-entry equipment.
The wells in the Upper Zakum field require the ability to selectively re-enter laterals to effectively stimulate the entire length of each lateral as well as provide the ability to obtain future data acquisition in the laterals. The successful installation provides the operators with reliable and repeatable re-entry capabilities and the ability to get into each lateral in the future for data acquisition.
The well was successfully drilled and completed by Halliburton's Sperry Drilling Services. Drilling and completion operations were done with a drilling rig, followed by stimulation and production testing operations using a workover barge.
The most important achievement was the construction of a multiple-window multilateral well after remedial cementing operations were performed to restore zonal isolation around the liner. The well is the highest angle (89°) that the dual, mechanical through-tubing re-entry tools have been run successfully. This was the third successful and most challenging trial well done in the Upper Zakum field to date.
The Upper Zakum reservoir consists of several layers of oil-producing formations and each formation must be isolated from the others. The well accessed four separate reservoir targets from one main well bore. The well is being produced through dual tubing strings, with the three lower reservoirs producing through one string and the uppermost reservoir producing through the other tubing string.
Visualizing HP/HT
As drilling in high-pressure/high-temperature (HP/HT) conditions become routine worldwide, the need for precise pressure data is greater than ever. GeoPressure Technology Ltd. has developed a suite of niche software that manages and visualizes pressure data for successful drilling in HP/HT conditions. The range, designed to meet the specific needs of both geoscientists and engineers that analyze and interpret data, includes:
PressureView, pressure database and interpretation software that enables users to conduct a pressure analysis, including creation of a range of single and multiwell plots including pressure-depth, mud weight-depth and overpressure-depth, with power to zoom in and out to interrogate large datasets.
PressureViewExpress, for drillers, engineers and geologists who want data input from file and cut-and-pasting from external spreadsheets, an upper limit of 64 wells, and rapid results. The software is suitable for projects with relatively modest number of wells where data reside in spreadsheets and pressure and depth units vary.
New LWD services
Two new logging-while-drilling (LWD) services from Inteq, LithoTrak LWD porosity and SoundTrak LWD acoustic, offer accurate logging measurements in real time. They provide critical measurements to enhance rig site safety and optimize well placement and offer geologists and petrophysicists log data for detailed post-well analysis.
The LWD porosity service provides more comprehensive formation evaluation while providing image data for real-time reservoir navigation and decision-making. The introduction of an azimuthal caliper will allow for borehole stability evaluation while assisting in completion design decisions.
The LWD acoustic service now measures a wider range of accurate compressional slowness in real time. Differentiating capability is possible through an improved measurement design and dual-frequency operational modes. Varying formation slowness can be measured in longer drilled intervals. The quadrupole measurements operational envelope is extended by using the dual-frequency capability, enabling a direct acquisition of shear slowness.
System fine-tunes resolution
Fakespace has introduced the Beacon 8MP, a stereoscopic projection system with an 8.85 megapixel native resolution. The spatial detail made possible with this system is ideal for terascale data and image-critical applications such as scientific research, vehicle design reviews, geophysical interpretation and well planning.
The Beacon 8MP uses patent-pending shutter technology developed by Fakespace to produce active stereo image quality and ultra-high resolution without the need to tile multiple projectors of lesser resolutions. At the core of the projector are two light engines that each display 4,096 by 2,160 resolution and 5,000 lumens of brightness.
Electronic shutters placed in front of each light engine alternate on and off in rapid succession to generate separate left eye and right eye images. When the Beacon shutters are synchronized with electronic shutter glasses, high-quality active stereo images can be viewed.
