TerraSpark announced today that it has formed a strategic research and development relationship with JOA Oil and Gas B.V. of The Netherlands to enable the company to broaden its offering by including TerraSpark’s Automatic Fault Extraction (AFE) software.
Under the agreement, TerraSpark is developing its AFE as a plug-in to JOA’s Jewel Suite technology.
“We are very excited about working with JOA,” said Geoffrey Dorn, president of TerraSpark. “Our AFE capability along with JOA's patented gridding system and other advancements JOA is making will enable customers to build detailed reservoir models much more efficiently and accurately.”
TerraSpark’s AFE uses patented technology to semi-automatically interpret the faults. It enhances the seismic interpretation workflow by adding an automated aspect to the interpretation. Once AFE identifies and extracts the faults, the interpreter can then review the results and make adjustments to tune the fault extraction process if necessary. This plug-in will accelerate the seismic interpretation workflow and improve the accuracy of the results.

"The fact is that oil and gas companies do not have the personnel or time for people to interpret everything manually and do it at a high-quality level for every field they produce. AFE combines computer power with human brain power to deliver highly accurate interpretations in a very short time frame,” said Christina Hutchinson of JOA. “We can build models in Jewel Suite in a few weeks that our competition has struggled to build in a year’s time. This opens the floodgates for reservoir modeling. With Jewel Suite and TerraSpark’s AFE plug-in, a company will not be limited to only modeling their large, highly complex fields, which means that even the smaller fields can now be modeled for optimized recovery.”
”The human evaluation and quality control of the process is still critical. AFE simply eliminates the tedious and time-consuming element of manually picking the faults,” added Dorn. “This enables the users to move through the overall interpretation much faster and more accurately, and it gives them a better understanding of the subsurface.”
