Utilizing API’s Contractor Implementation Tool to Align Safety Programs

3:00 PM CDT
Duration: 60 minutes

In November 2022, API and the joint Pipeline SMS Industry Team published Pipeline SMS: A Contractor’s Guide to give pipeline contractors and service providers an enhanced understanding of how the scope of their safety programs should be integrated with an operator’s Pipeline SMS.

As a complement, API published a Contractor’s Implementation Tool in May of 2023. This tool pulls all 56 individual requirements from RP 1173 that the Pipeline SMS Industry Team and the Contractor community agreed as being the basis for PSMS collaboration between the contractor and the customer-operator. This tool is one of the tools available free of charge at www.pipelinesms.org.

In this presentation, API will review the tool, and the engagements to date with the contractor community to encourage use of the tool. Also, we will talk about the coordination efforts with the Operator community to ensure that contractors who use the program are supported in their communications with their clients. The API Pipeline SMS Assessment Programs work together to use RP 1173 as the basis for collaboration on safety programs.

Key Learning Objectives
  1. Understand the value of guidance for pipeline contractors.
  2. Review API’s Contractor Implementation Tool and discuss the results of its engagements with the contractor community so far.
  3. Understand how a contractor or service provider can leverage the Pipeline SMS program to encourage more productive conversations with their customer-operators on safety programs.
