API, Rystad Energy Address Oil and Gas Industry’s Biggest Regulatory Hurdle

From a ban on Russian oil to the largest SPR release in U.S. history, the ongoing crisis in Ukraine has elevated the need for policymakers to address regulatory hurdles facing U.S. producers.

Amanda Eversole, executive vice president and COO of API, and Emily McClain, vice president, North American gas markets at Rystad Energy, recently joined Hart Energy to weigh in on the most pressing regulatory matter facing the U.S. oil and gas industry today.

“The good news is I think the [Biden] administration is acknowledging and recognizing what’s going on and we share the view that our national security is helped by this industry so we look forward to working with the administration both on the issues surrounding what we’re seeing happening in Ukraine right now but also ensuring that we’ve got the great jobs here in this country to help hardworking Americans deliver energy that we all need for our daily lives,” Eversole said.

“The infrastructure is really where we’re going to run into some potential hurdles or concerns down the road,” McClain added.

“That’s because we know gas is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years,” she continued. “With everything we’re facing today, we’ve seen the importance of natural gas and it is an interconnected system. In fact, we’re seeing in our forecasts over the next three years, about 24%-30% increase in both the Permian and Haynesville. Now those are the two primary regions that are going to support this growth that we’re seeing but I think the question really becomes whether these gas basins can meet that growing demand...can the gas get to markets?”

“We anticipate that we’ll see many pipeline bottlenecks as early as 2023 if we don’t see all of the planned and scheduled infrastructure projects moving ahead as scheduled,” she said.

Amanda Eversole serves as executive vice president and COO, leading efforts to integrate API’s diverse functions and develop and implement a strategic plan for the natural gas and oil industry.

Eversole previously served as managing director and head of public affairs at JPMorgan Chase & Co., overseeing strategic communications, civic engagement and strategy for the corporate responsibility team. Eversole created and built JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s public affairs function, leveraging a campaign style process focused on aligning inclusive economic growth and deeper local engagement around the world. Eversole also created a framework for the firm’s philanthropic approach, which was highlighted last year as part of Fortune’s “#1 Company Changing the World” recognition.

Prior to her time at JPMorgan Chase & Co., Eversole spent 13 years at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C. She served as president of C_TEC, the Chamber Technology Engagement Center, where she developed and expanded ties between technology companies and policymakers and served as senior vice president of the U.S. Chamber Center for Capital Markets Competitiveness, a program she helped launch in 2006 to advance America’s global leadership in capital formation. Eversole also served as chief of staff to Chamber President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue and oversaw marketing and communications for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. Prior to joining the U.S. Chamber, she worked for RTC Relationship Marketing – a WPP Group company – in business development.

Emily McClain is a vice president on Rystad Energy’s Gas Markets team. In her role she is responsible for providing natural gas expertise focused on the North Americas gas market, including the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Her responsibilities include coverage of upstream, midstream and downstream gas as well as pricing analysis across different North American price hubs. She has more than 10 years of experience in the oil and gas industry.

Prior to joining Rystad, McClain held various roles with the last being at IHS Markit in Houston as a research analyst in upstream gas basins and global asset valuations. Before that she worked in Pittsburgh at Williams as a GIS analyst and began her career at Shell as a geophysicist for their Marcellus and Utica assets.
