Renewable biomass energy company Active Energy appointed Barron Hewetson to CTO, the company announced in a June 20 press release.
Active Energy produces renewable pellets from waste biomass material. Its patented product CoalSwitch is blended and co-fired with coal at any ratio to reduce emissions.
Hewetson has previous leadership experience in the biomass energy sector, joining Active Energy from Enviva Biomass Inc. as the director of innovation and product management. He also previously served as both operations manager and quality manager at Enviva subsidiary Sampson Wood Pellets.
“With tightening emissions standards in the U.S., increasing concerns about the sustainability of white pellet for energy across Europe and continuous commitments from brands and countries to voluntarily decarbonize, we are seeing significant demand for CoalSwitch,” Michael Rowan, Active Energy CEO, said.
Hewetson is also the co-founder of Spero Energy, a developer of high-value chemicals for the food industry. He holds a doctorate and a master of science in agricultural and biological engineering from Purdue University, as well as a Bachelor of Arts from Wabash College.
“Barron’s proven ability to scale biomass production as well as invent new processes and technologies will only hasten our ability to produce more fuel, quicker as well as innovate new products to meet our customers’ needs,” Rowan said.
Headquartered in London, Active Energy focuses on the production and development of biomass products meant to help coal-dependent industries decarbonize without carbon capture technology.
