Halliburton's Westport Technology Center announced its Total Field Analytical Services (T-FAS), a new offering where a lab professional comes to a drilling site to capture hydrocarbon samples, do some initial onsite analysis to determine the integrity of samples, transports the samples back to the lab for further testing, and stores the samples long-term for the client operator.
At a recent media tour of the technology center, Dr. Cyrus Irani, T-FAS team leader, explained that the benefit to the client is a definitive chain of custody for the samples and a single point of accountability - no more wondering who has your samples and where they are, now you will know. Also, this service reduces the problem of hydrocarbon samples being contaminated with drilling fluid because sample testing is done onsite. If onsite testing shows the samples are contaminated, new samples can be taken right away, saving valuable time.
For downhole sample collection, the laboratory staff has available the T-FAS SPS 15 single phase sampler which can be run either on wire/slick line or carried on pipe using Halliburton's SIMBA or FasTest carrier. On wire/slick line the samplers can be activated using mechanical or electronic clocks. When carried on pipe, activation is through an annular pressure trigger. Each sampler has a 600 cc capacity, and can be run at 15,000 psi and 360°F (182°C) in hostile environments. Westport also has available field transfer equipment for transferring samples from the samplers to long-term storage cylinders.
To provide onsite testing, Westport staff adapted their laboratory expertise to deliver a portable dead oil contamination/composition (DOCA) capability. This bulky lab equipment was downsized to fit into three 28-in. cubicle travel boxes and fortified to withstand the wear-and-tear of travel to a rig.
