During the past four years, Western Canada's top gas wells were almost all found in the Rocky Mountain region, where thick, fractured reservoirs are filled with high-pressure gas, Calgary-based FirstEnergy Capital Corp. reports. Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. led all the explorers with 28 high-volume wells drilled between 2001 and 2004, the firm says. EnCana Corp. ranked second, with 10 wells. And, EnCana holds the distinction of bringing the most gas onstream in Western Canada. The company has the ability to drill more than 4,000 wells per year, and during 2004 it added 856 million cubic feet of new production per day. The company with the best average gas rate per well was Talisman. During 2002-04, Talisman's wells averaged flow rates of more than 1 million cubic feet per day, FirstEnergy reports. The company also scored the peak producing well of 2004: its B-058 Brazion, which flowed 54 million cubic feet per day. This is the best well brought onstream in Western Canada since 1988. The 1988 find was BP's Blackstone well at 2/11-22-44-16W5. This monster flowed at an initial rate of 134 million cubic feet per day, and has made 336 billion cubic feet of gas to date. It still flows approximately 24 million cubic feet per day, and continues to hold its place as the best gas well ever drilled in Western Canada. Other operators with high-flowing gas wells that made FirstEnergy's 2004 Top 10 list included Suncor, Canadian Forest, EOG Resources, Burlington Resources, Petro-Canada and Fairborne Energy Ltd.
