Denbury Inc. will develop and operate a new CO2 sequestration site in southwest Louisiana, the company announced Dec. 13 in a press release.
Strategically located approximately 25 miles north of Denbury’s Green Pipeline, the 31,000-acre site has the potential to store up to 250 million metric tons of CO2. It will provide storage for the heavy industrial areas of Beaumont and Port Arthur, Texas and Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Being located in Allen, Beauregard and Vernon Parishes, it will be in close proximity to more than 60 million metric tons per year of existing emissions.
This new sequestration site will boost Denbury’s carbon capture, utilization and sequestration (CCUS) operations. The company’s current target is to fully negate its Scope 1, 2 and 3 CO2 emissions by 2030 by increasing the amount of captured industrial CO2 used in its operations. Currently, Denbury injects over 4 million tons of captured industrial-sourced CO2 annually.
“Today’s announcement adds an important piece in the development of our CCUS business, providing another significant future storage site in close proximity to our pipeline infrastructure, which naturally expands the reliability and future capacity of our network,” said Nik Wood, Denbury senior vice president, CCUS.
The site’s first injection is planned for as early as 2026.
