Canada’s Neoflow Inc. has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to complete their development of a digital platform for tracking natural gas flows, according to an Oct. 2 press release.

The platform provides secure energy traceability including proof of origin, composition and environmental impact while digitizing relevant value chain data, according to the company’s website.

The project began in 2019 with the goal of using innovative technologies, including distributed ledger technology, verifiable credentials and decentralized identifiers, to digitally trace the U.S. and Canada’s natural gas through the supply chain. During 2022, Canada’s crude oil and natural gas imports to the U.S. exceeded $110 billion.

Neoflow CEO Jim Oosterbaan said the Phase 4 contract recognizes the company’s efforts in developing technology that modernizes how natural gas shifts between borders.

“Phase 4 is the last stage of the development process and will include a technical demonstration to validate readiness for production,” Oosterbaan said in a press release.

The contract was awarded through Silicon Valley Innovation Program, which works with private sector partners to advance homeland security solutions.
