A new seal face coating has been developed to combat the problem of dry running. Diamond is the hardest natural mineral known and offers chemical and thermal resistance. DiamondFaces is a synthetically manufactured, ultra-pure diamond with the same characteristics as the stone, according to developer EagleBurgmann. A DiamondFaces microcrystalline coating of 8-µm thickness on a silicon carbide seal face extends the life of the seal, reducing maintenance costs and minimizing lifecycle costs for pump users.
The microcrystalline diamond coating for mechanical seals was developed to provide wear protection in conditions of dry-running, mixed friction, and abrasive media. In addition, energy savings from fewer power demands to the pump, along with a short-term return on investment, make the seal’s technology a viable option for the sealing of pumps.?
Additional features include:
• Relatively no wearing of the diamond coating;
• Reduced sliding-face friction;
• Extended mean time between failures and repairs;
• Significant energy savings;
• Increased application range; and
• Shortened return on investment.
