EDP Renewables’ Sharp Hills Wind Farm in Alberta, Canada has commenced operations as of Jan. 22, the company announced.
The new wind farm has 297 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity and is EDPR Canada’s third renewable energy site. In addition to Sharp Hills, EDPR Canada operates the Nation Rise Wind Farm (100-MW capacity) and the South Branch Wind Farm (30-MW capacity), for a total operating capacity of 427 MW in Canada.
Sharp Hills is the “largest, single-phase wind farm developed by EDP Renewables to date in North America,” Sandhya Ganapathy, CEO of EDPR North America, said in the press release.
The Sharp Hills wind project saw more than CA$600 million (US$445 million) in capital investments following an agreement between EDPR NA and Invest Alberta Corp. to spur economic growth and job creation in Alberta’s renewable energy sector.
In addition to the economic growth spurred by the project’s construction, the Sharp Hills project also will pay millions in land-lease payments to landowners and to Canada’s Special Areas Board, according to the press release.
