Endeavor Energy Resources LP’s Founder and Chairman of the Board Autry C. Stephens has passed away at age 86, Endeavor announced in an Aug. 16 press release.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved founder, Autry C. Stephens," said Lance Robertson, Endeavor's president and CEO. "Over many decades, his vision and discipline inspired so many and were the driving forces behind what makes Endeavor unique. Autry embodied the wildcat mentality of courage, grit and tenacity associated with the Permian Basin. He leaves a legacy that will continue to shape the future of our company, community and the oil and gas industry for years to come."

Stephens created a legacy in the Permian Basin, starting out as a sole proprietor in 1979 before turning his proprietorship into Endeavor in 2000.

His vertically-integrated business model centered on purchasing mineral rights and vertical drilling. He focused on acquisitions during industry downturns that added value to his portfolio and access to exclusive service and supply pricing, Endeavor said in the announcement.

In 2016, Endeavor began its transition from drilling vertical Midland Basin Spraberry Trend wells to becoming a top horizontal operator in Midland.

Stephens was recognized as part of Hart Energy’s Hall of Fame in 2023.

Lyndal Stephens Greth, previously vice chairman, will take the helm of Endeavor’s board of managers as chairman.
