Satellite images have revealed an LNG tanker docking at a sanctioned Russian export terminal, Bloomberg reported August 5.
According to the ship traffic intelligence firm TankerTrackers.com, the vessel at Arctic LNG 2 is managed by an Indian company. The tanker is sending signals that it’s 800 miles away, a practice called spoofing. The vessel, named Pioneer, is most likely part of Russia's shadow fleet of LNG tankers, which it is assembling to circumvent sanctions.
Russia already has a fleet of oil tankers in use for the same purpose, according to Bloomberg.
In November, the U.S. imposed sanctions on Arctic LNG 2 in north-central Russia above the Arctic Circle. The plant suspended operations in April.
No fuel has been shipped from the site. Sanctions have kept other countries from making deals for LNG, and international restrictions have stopped the delivery of tankers that can handle sea ice.
