Salud. And nugatory onde secondaire, which, of course, in legatechnich means "void secondary wave," a term much used in the seismic industry. I employ this phrase to introduce a new language - legatechnich, or the combined language of the legal world and the oil and gas technical world. If you read Stephen Pearce's comments in "The Last Word" at the back of the January issue, you should get a feel for the topic. Lawsuits can eat up as much money as a good-sized drilling budget in some years. The rounds of lawsuits seem, at times, to increase exponentially. It will get even worse. So, if we are going to have to live with this, I propose that the two spheres need to speak a common language - hence legatechnich.
A number of legatechnich phrases can be useful. Below are a couple you might find the need to use in conversations involving gadzillion-dollar lawsuits and this industry.
Take "Nudum pactum appareil de forage appartenant aux entrepreneurs de forage" for example. Nudum pactum is, of course, legalese meaning naked contract. The balance is French and translates as a contract for a contractor-owned rig. When you hear this in court, the attorney, barrister, etc. is indicating that whomever signed the contract for the rig did so when he/she was naked and obviously not thinking about the many slippery clauses in the contract. This will cost you big bucks.
Or consider "determinacao de reserva pendente lite." You will, no doubt, immediately recognize "determinacao de reserva" as the Portuguese phrase meaning reserves determination. "Pendente lite" is, of course, legalese (from Latin) and means, loosely translated, pending litigation. It is a hand phrase when you suspect that the huge possible reserves that you are looking at/evaluating may eventually be the subject of legal action that redefines the industry.
On a more serious note, you will note some changes in this issue of E&P. Specifically, the popular Activity Highlights pages in the back of the magazine have been shortened. We have made this change for two reasons. First, we plan to expand our technical features in order to cover emerging technologies and technology applications more completely. More importantly, through the use of our Web site - eandpnet.com - we will be able to bring our readers expanded and more timely coverage of the exploration and development news that shapes the future of the industry.
Henceforth, the shortened Activity Highlights pages will feature the 30 or so exploration and development highlights that our editors deem the most important worldwide. By accessing the Activity Highlights section of eandpnet.com (hit the Activity Highlights button on the home screen) readers will have access to expanded coverage of the highlights in the magazine plus coverage of the entire gamut of important upstream activities worldwide. And, rather than monthly updates, the activity news will be updated on no less than a weekly basis. Please visit the site and let us have your opinions and suggestions.
In the March and April issues, you will find more changes designed to enhance the readability and visual appeal of the magazine. This in no way will impact our commitment to quality coverage of technology and management issues. As always, we welcome your comments.
