Louisville, Kentucky-based PCC Hydrogen Inc. is planning to construct a pilot hydrogen production plant in Cloverdale, Indiana, the low-carbon hydrogen production company announced in a June 13 press release.
The hydrogen plant will be the first negative carbon index hydrogen production facility of its kind in the world, converting ethanol into green hydrogen using a combined method of a patented reforming process and capturing CO2 byproduct.
Hydrogen generated can be used in a range of applications from hydrogen combustion engines to fuel cells—fuel cell powered loaders, truckers, rolling stock and fuel cells in non-grid connected BEV charging stations.
PCC is also exploring different hydrogen-use options, such as using hydrogen to lower the emissions profile of heating-calcining processes and lessening transportation costs by producing hydrogen at smaller, distributed facilities closer to points of use.
PCC Hydrogen commissioned Plant Process Group, a design, engineering, fabrication, construction and start-up services company, to support the plant’s target operations by first quarter 2024.
The company is also working with the Town of Cloverdale and Putnam County to decarbonize the local industry and plans to hire locally.
“The Cloverdale location is ideal for the construction and operation of our first production facility given existing local hydrogen demand and the potential for broad adoption of low cost, negative carbon index hydrogen to help decarbonize the local economy in a financially rational way,” Tim Fogarty, PCC CEO, said.
