Petrohawk Energy Corp. has found a new gas play in the Eagle Ford shale in La Salle County, Texas. The discovery well, STS #241-1H, was drilled to 11,300 feet and placed on production at a rate of 9.1 million cubic feet of gas equivalent—7.6 million cubic feet of gas and 250 barrels of condensate per day.

The company reports that an approximate 3,200-foot lateral was drilled and subsequently fracture stimulated with more than 2 million pounds of sand in 10 stages. A confirmation well, the second drilled on the project, Dora Martin #1H, which is 15 miles from the discovery well, has been drilled, cored and logged. The quality of the Eagle Ford shale in this well appears to be superior to that found in STS #241-1H, Petrohawk reports. The company is currently drilling the lateral on this second well and a third well was spudded.

Petrohawk reports it has leased more than150,000 net acres in what it believes to be the most prospective areas for commercial production from the shale. The field is immediately south of Stuart City Field, which is on the Edwards Reef Trend that extends ?across South Texas.

Pioneer Natural Resources reports it has drilled an Eagle Ford discovery well too, and it has 310,000 prospective acres.

Petrohawk reports drilling and completion costs for the development wells range between $5- and $7 million each. Development costs, including one rig that will run continuously on the project, have already been included in the company’s 2008 and 2009 capex plans. The company will also access existing gathering and transportation infrastructure.

Petrohawk is operator with 90% working interest.
