Fugro-Robertson Inc. has recently unveiled a potential fields modeling software that offers new features, enabling a model to be built using voxels for which a variety of attributes can be designated. One benefit is the ability to build models with more detail than previously available. This is also indicative of a trend to use gravity and magnetics data on the prospect-level scale as opposed to the older view that potential fields data are only useful for regional analysis.
A key benefit of the new release is a toolkit that allows the user to import well log data in the form of LAS files, edit and/or enhance them, and construct density voxels for each layer. Lateral and vertical variations in densities are handled using this tool, thus saving a significant amount of time in the model-building phase of a project.
In addition, new visualization capabilities allow for the display and rotation of the well logs and 3-D model, which helps the interpreter see what is being done in real time.
The 3-D modeling package, 3MOD, has been rewritten in Java to incorporate new algorithms with an improved user interface. A Linux version is being made available.
