Jaxon Caines, technology reporter, Hart Energy: Data is the biggest pain point and, simultaneously, the biggest solution for challenges in the energy industry. This company has been a part of the industry for a 100+ years, but they haven't had a digital completions data platform until now.
Travis Thomas, director of digital completions, National Oilwell Varco (NOV): NOV’s tagline is, ‘We power the industry that powers the world.’ But how can you power the industry and not connect to your equipment? Some may say that NOV is the only company in the last 100 years that has had a piece of equipment on every single well that has been drilled in the Western Hemisphere and most of the rest of the globe. If we're going to provide all this equipment, we have to connect to that equipment to make sure we're making better equipment for the customers, better operation flow, and we're helping the industry move forward being more efficient. A lot of groups that do data platforms, they're trying to only focus at that one job or that one operation. We're trying to help focus on the whole operation, from the equipment health to the operational location, whether it's frack or coiled tubing or workovers, all the way to the post job analysis so you can pre-plan for the next job and come out and do better next time.
JC: What does your digital completion solution consist of?
TT: So, Max Completions is the name of the platform that we're using. It's not just a website, it is actually the sensors that are integrated into the equipment. So when you build the equipment, it has all the sensors, it has the aggregating boxes, it has the cloud connection to get it to the website, and then has the ability to transfer that data to the E&Ps, the service companies looking at the data. So, it's a complete end-to-end solution. So what you'd like to say is sensor to squiggle, every bit of it is there in one single spot, but it doesn't just have to be NOV equipment. It could also be anyone else's. So it's agnostic to the oil field. So we're going to do a really good job with our equipment and help make it better. But we'll also put it on anything off there in the field.
