1 Encana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. has completed a Mancos shale-gas discovery in the Piceance Basin that initially flowed 2.87 million cu. ft. of gas per day. The Calgary-based operator’s #02-6DHH B07 799 Kim-ball Mountain is in Section 7-7s-99w of Garfield County, Colo. The well produces from Mancos perforations between 4,945 ft. and 12,865 ft. in both the vertical and horizontal portions of the hole. After 26-stage fracture stimulation the well was tested on a 16/64-in. choke, with a tubing pressure of 3,182 psi and a casing pressure of 1,901 psi. The horizontal lateral extends from 6,331 ft. northward to 13,063 ft. at a bottomhole location in Section 6-7s-99w. The true vertical depth is 7,348 ft. The Mancos discovery is near Gasaway Field where most production comes from Williams Fork (Mesaverde). About one mile to the east, Encana has locations staked for three horizontal Mancos tests, all to be drilled from the same pad in Section 8-7s-99w.
2 A Samson Resources Co. well initially flowed 3.56 million cu. ft. of gas, with 224 bbl. of condensate and 339 bbl. of water per day from a site in Wyoming’s Washakie Basin. The Desert Springs Field producer, #44-29 Endurance Unit, is in Section 29-15n-95w of Sweetwater County. Production comes from a Fort Union interval at 9,206-9,844 ft. following three stages of fracture stimulation. Tested on a 24/64-in. choke, the casing pressure was 1,550 psi. Tulsa-based Samson drilled the producer to 10,012 ft.
3 A horizontal Niobrara wildcat was completed by Chesapeake Operating Inc. on the southern flank of the Powder River Basin. The venture initially flowed 230 bbl. of 40-degreegravity oil, 204,000 cu. ft. of gas and 522 bbl. of water per day. The #34-72-12-1H Sundquist Flats is in Section 12-34n-72w of Converse County, Wyo. Production comes from a lateral extending from 10,850 ft. north- northwestward to 17,825 ft. at a bottomhole location in Section 2-34n-72w. The true vertical total depth is 11,854 ft. The well was tested following 18 stages of fracture stimulation between 12,200 and 17,638 ft. Gauged on a 22/66-in. choke, the casing pressure was 550 psi and the reservoir pressure was 5,800 psi. Chesapeake’s headquarters are in Oklahoma City.
4 A horizontal Niobrara wildcat on the northwestern flank of the Denver-Julesburg Basin was reported by IHS Inc. Denver-based
Samson Oil & Gas Inc.’s discovery flowed 131 bbl. of oil and 307 bbl. of load water during a 24-hour pump test. The #2-29H Defender US33 is in Section 29-25n-63w of Goshen County, Wyo., and was drilled to 11,089 ft. Production comes from a horizontal Niobrara B zone lateral extending from 7,310 ft. northward to a bottomhole location in the same section. The lateral was fracture stimulated in 15 stages using a plug-and-perf method and the produced water is largely fracturing fluid, based on regular chemical sampling. The company holds a 37.5% working interest in the well, which is the first Niobrara appraisal well in Samson’s Hawk Springs project.
5 Nautilus Poplar LLC of Denver completed a shallow-pay discovery in East Poplar Field on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Montana. In Section 11-28n-51e, Roosevelt County, #117 East Poplar Unit (EPU) initially flowed 106 bbl. per day of oil with no reported water. Production is from a Pennsylvanian Amsden interval at about 4,800 ft. Tested on a 10/64-in. choke, the tubing pressure was 95 psi. It was drilled to 5,450 ft. The Amsden pay discovery is a twin to a deeper Madison producer in the field that was completed in 1955.
6 A Red River vertical wildcat discovery by Dallas-based
Petro-Hunt LLC initially flowed 216 bbl. of oil, 5,000 cu. ft. of gas and 211 bbl. of water. The #18-55-30B-1-1 USA is in Section 30-18n-55e, Dawson County, Mont., and produced from a C interval after drilling to 11,253 ft. Site log tops include Red River at 10,891 ft. and Red River C zone at 11,026 ft. One mile north of the new discovery, Petro-Hunt has a location staked for a proposed 11,000-ft. Red River test; no activity has been reported at that site.
7 Oasis Petroleum North America has completed a two-section Middle Bakken horizontal exploratory test that initially flowed 1,227 bbl. of oil, 892,000 cu. ft. of gas and 4,179 bbl. of load water per day. The #15-22H Susie is in Section 15-27n-58e of Roosevelt County, Mont. Production comes from a fractured horizontal lateral extending from 10,660 ft. southward to 19,850 ft. at a bottomhole location in Section 22-27n-58e. The true vertical total depth is 10,203 ft. It is two miles southwest of Bainville II Field, where oil and gas has been produced from Madison, Nisku and Red River. Additional completion details are not available. Oasis’ headquarters are in Houston

Burlington drilled a lateral extending from 11,040 ft. southward to 20,547 ft. at a bottomhole location in Section 12-151n-96w. The true vertical depth is 10,830 ft. and the well was tested following 20-stage fracture stimulation. Gauged on a 28/64-in. choke, the casing pressure was 2,250 psi. Continental Resources holds a 17% working interest in the producer, which is on the southern Nesson Anticline in the Clear Creek Field area. Burlington’s headquarters are in Houston.
11 According to IHS Inc., NordAq Energy Inc. has filed a lease plan of operations permit application with the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Oil and Gas, regarding a proposed stepout from its recent gas discovery on the northern Kenai Peninsula. The appraisal well is planned for Section 11-8n-10w of Seward Meridian. The venture will be directionally drilled from state lands on ADL 391596 to a bottomhole location on a lease from Cook Inlet Region Inc. Primary objectives are the Beluga and Tyonek sands. The delineation test is about 1.5 miles north of Anchorage-based NordAq’s #1 Shadura discovery in Section 23-8n-10w. No details were released on the 14,500-ft. test; however, NordAq is working on federal, state and local applications to develop gas at the site. NordAq’s project area is about four miles west of the Swanson River Unit, where Standard Oil Co. of California and Richfield Oil Corp. completed the Cook Inlet Basin’s first commercial discovery in 1957.

Most land in the U.S. is divided into townships—rectangular tracts six miles square. The township, in turn, is divided into 36 numbered sections, each a one-mile square. The lines running north-south and dividing east from west are called range lines. The lines running east-west and dividing north from south are township lines.
A well in Section 15-Township 4 north-Range 3 east is abbreviated: 15-4n-3e.
