According to a recent Upstream article, Rystad Energy has conducted a research project analyzing 224 Polish exploration concessions and found it has a possible 370 potential wells in the next few years.

Rystad found that shale gas development has pushed Poland’s exploration efforts forward

150 commitment exploration wells and 220 optional exploration wells have been developed between more than 20 operators and the Ministry of Environment over 30% of Poland’s land.

Presently 20-30 exploration wells are drilled each year but activity is expected to increase to 50-80 each year.

“The large amount for work promised to the licensing authority, the Ministry of Environment, is an opportunity for expansion of the oilfield services sector in Poland as more than 370 wells could to be drilled at costs of up $15 million each,” says Rystad.

There are plans for approximately 20,000 kilometers of new 2D seismic and more than 6,000 square kilometers of 3D seismic.

Rystad estimates reserves of approximately 1 trillion cubic meters.

“We have based our estimate of Poland’s shale gas potential on information from the Polish Geological Institute and benchmarked this against our proprietary research on key US shale gas plays,” says analyst manger at Rystad Per Magnus Nysveen.
