Chevron Suspends Expansion Work on Israel’s Leviathan Gas Field

In wake of the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, Chevron has suspended the planned expansion of Israel’s Leviathan gas field, partner NewMed Energy said Oct. 7.

As one of the largest deepwater gas discoveries, the Leviathan gas field sits in 1,645 m of water and is estimated to contain 22 Tcf of gas.

This expansion was part of a broader strategy to enhance the Leviathan Field’s total gas production capacity to up to 21 Bcm annually. The delay affects the installation of the third subsea transmission pipeline, which would increase gas supply to the country’s natural gas lines by 2 MMcf/d. Work is expected to resume in April 2025.

Chevron Mediterranean operates the field with a 39.66% stake. NewMed Energy owns a 45.34% stake in the field, with Ratio Energies holding the remaining 15%.

CNOOC is currently completing the second phase of development for the field, focusing on the gas reserves in the South China Sea. The company hopes to eventually tap into the 50 Bcm of natural gas reserves.

In a separate milestone, CNOOC recently drilled a well in the Liwan 4-1 structure of the Pearl -River Mouth Basin, marking what it called a major exploration achievement in ultradeep water.
