EVgo and Chevron are working together to bring Electric Vehicle fast charging to select Chevron gas stations in California, the two announced on May 20.
It is one of the first times such partnerships where of EV charging is being placed at a conventional gas station in the U.S. But as the energy mix continues to change, especially in California, so does the likelihood of more such installations at conventional gas stations.
A published report by Atlantic Council in January said Shell and ExxonMobil have started looking into at adding charging stations to some of their gas stations.
Currently, there are a dozen fast chargers installed at five Chevron company-owned and operated gas stations in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area. More installations will come in the next few months.
“We are excited to be working with EVgo to install electric vehicle charging stations at select locations in California,” Alice Flesher, general manager of Chevron’s company-owned and operated network of motor fuel stations said in a statement. “While gasoline and diesel remain an important part of California’s transportation energy mix, we are always exploring how to evolve our offering, helping improve the consumer experience and working to remain the preferred brand choice on the West Coast.”
According to the press release, these Chevron-EVgo chargers will range from 50 to 100 kilowatts in capacity. The stations are located in Venice, Menlo Park, Aliso Viejo and Manhattan Beach communities.
“We believe the future of transportation is electric, and EVgo is helping everyone—including traditional fueling stations—take advantage of the benefits of EV adoption,” EVgo CEO Cathy Zoi, EVgo said in a statement. “EVgo is excited to work with Chevron to bring fast-charging to gas stations today and applauds the company’s forward-thinking efforts to serve the rapidly growing market of electric vehicle drivers in California.”
EVgo is the largest public EV fast-charging network in the United States. The company has more than 1,100 fast chargers and over 1,000 level 2 chargers in 66 metropolitan markets across the country. The EVgo fast chargers are able to deliver up to 90 miles of range in 30 minutes.
