After drilling and logging the Mopane-1X well offshore Namibia with its partners NAMCOR and Custos Energy, Galp Energia made a “significant” light oil discovery on Jan. 10, the company said.

Mopane-1X, located in the Orange Basin, is the first exploration well at PEL 83. PEL 83 is located near many large discoveries in the basin, including Shell’s Graff-1, La Rona-1 and Jonker-1 and TotalEnergies’ giant Venus-1 oil discovery.
Data will be analyzed, and a drill stem test will be performed in the coming weeks to assess the commercial viability of the discovery.
Upon completion of the drilling operations at Mopane-1X, the rig will be relocated to the Mopane-2X location to further evaluate the Mopane discovery.
