The Norwegian government approved plans for the operation of the Snøhvit gas field and Hammerfest LNG, subject to certain conditions.
Approval of Snøhvit Future pushed plans to begin electrification from 2028 to 2030, with current gas turbines to be assessed for maintenance by 2028 as back-up power sources in 2030-2033.
Electrification of Hammerfest LNG will reduce CO2 emissions from the plant by around 850,000 tonnes annually, making it the most substantial individual emission reduction decision for decarbonizing oil and gas production in Norway.
The project will ensure operation and export from Melkøya towards 2050, Geir Tungesvik, executive vice president for projects drilling and procurement at Equinor, said in a press release.
"The project generates substantial spin-offs and jobs both in Finnmark, Northern Norway and nationally. Around 70% of value creation in the development phase is expected to go to Norwegian companies,” said Tungesvik.
The Snøhvit partners are investing NOK 13.2 billion (2022) in the Snøhvit Future project.
Equinor Energy AS is the operator of the Snøhvit project with a 36.79% stake. Petoro AS (30.00%), TotalEnergies EP Norge AS (18.40%), Neptune Energy Norge AS (12.00%) and Wintershall Dea Norge AS (2.81%) are the remaining partners in the field.
