TotalEnergies and OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE) have signed long-term power purchase agreements to develop a trio of renewable energy projects in Oman that will generate 300 megawatts (MW), according to a Dec. 11 press release.

France's TotalEnergies (49% ownership) and OQAE (51%) plan to begin construction in early 2025 with electricity production anticipated in late 2026.

The developments are North Solar, a 100 MW solar project located in Saih Nihaydah in northern Oman, and Riyah-1 and Riyah-2, two 100 MW wind projects located in Amin and West Nimr fields in southern Oman.

The solar and wind projects are expected to generate over 1.4 terawatt-hours of renewable electricity annually, TotalEnergies said. The electricity generated will be supplied to Petroleum Development Oman, aligning with TotalEnergies' multi-energy strategy in the country, the release stated.

The projects support Oman Vision 2040 regarding diversifying energy sources to ensure sustainable energy security, said Aflah Al Hadhrami, managing director of Petroleum Development Oman.

“[The agreements] also support our aim of sourcing 30% of our power capacity from renewables by 2026, reflecting our dedication to a cleaner, sustainable future,” Al Hadhrami said.

The announcement follows TotalEnergies’ launch of Marsa LNG in the Sultanate of Oman. Marsa LNG plans to be fully electrically driven with a greenhouse gas intensity below 3 kg CO2e/boe, TotalEnergies announced in April.
